Halfway between Johannesburg and Durban, along Route 74, which is a slightly more scenic alternative to the main highway, lies the charming little village of Bergville, also known as the gateway to the Northern Drakensberg. The town is mainly a commercial and agricultural community, and the third Friday of each month there are local livestock sales.

Bergville is located along the beaches of Tugela River with the dramatic peaks of the Drakensberg in the background. There are grocery stores, butchers, banks and petrol stations and the town is a perfect stop for obtaining the supplies you might need during your stay in the mountains.

Moreover Bergville lies just 40 km from the Amphitheatre in the Royal Natal National Park. Spioenkop Dam is not far away and neither are Rugged Glen Nature Reserve, Cathkin's Peak State Forest and Monk's Cowl, making Bergville the perfect base from which to explore the majestic Drakensberg.
