Sani Pass is one of the most magnificent mountain passes in South Africa. The narrow serpentine road winds its way up the mountain and connects KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa with the independent country of Lesotho. The road is also known as Roof of Africa, and for good reason – the view from the summit, 3 200 meters above sea level, is spectacular and is reserved for those willing to hike through the mountains for a few days. At the top of Sani Pass, 2 874 meters above sea level, is a pub which is the highest located pub in the world.

To drive up along the Sani Pass, you must have a four wheel drive vehicle since the climb is very steep and the road uneven. Remember to bring your passport otherwise you will have to turn around when you are halfway there, when you cross the border into Lesotho.

Sani Pass is the only drivable road to Lesotho if you come from KwaZulu-Natal, and this is certainly an exciting day excursion!
