The Garden Route, with a recommended detour to the Klein Karoo and Oudtshoorn, has become South Africa's most popular destination, after Cape Town that is.

The area attracts tourists all year round to the indigenous forests, freshwater lakes, wetlands, protected coves and long golden sandy beaches. Here you can hike in the mountains, explore caves, cycle through the woods, visit the ostrich farms, dive with great white sharks, play golf on great courses or take a boat trip down one of the many rivers.

The narrow stretch of coastline that is the Garden Route stretches from Heidelberg in the west to the Storms River Mouth in the east, and from the Indian Ocean in the south to the top of the Outeniqua Mountains and Tsitsikamma Mountains in the north.

This is the official line, but it's often said that the Garden Route begins at Mossel Bay in the west and ends at Port Elizabeth in the east, and you won't even count Oudtshoorn in the north.
