North Coast

- Dolphins & golf -

The North Coast is the part of South Africa's east coast that lies north of Durban, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. North Coast is also known as the Dolphin Coast, due to the large amount of dolphin in these waters. Along this coastline are also some of South Africa's best golf courses!

The climate is often described as perpetual summer since the area has a subtropical climate because of the warm Mozambique Current. Daytime temperatures are around 30 degrees and in winter around 25 degrees. February is considered the hottest month, mostly because of the high humidity.

The beautiful North Coast stretches from Umhlanga in the south to the Tugela River in the north. The most important industry, apart from tourism, is sugar production. Large areas of the rolling hills are covered with sugar cane, which are easy to grow in the subtropical climate. Many of the first Indian immigrants settled here and the markets, mosques and temples help to create a sense of the Far East.

North Coast's long golden beaches offer an ideal mix for lovers of water sports, anglers and sunbathers. Further inland, sports and adventure are synonymous with horse riding, safaris, helicopter tours, crocodile farms and historic sites. North Coast is also a very popular destination among golfers.

The coastline is packed full of holiday destinations with wonderful beaches, the most famous are Tongaat Beach, Sheffield Beach, Zinkwazi Beach and the beaches in Ballito, Shaka's Rock, Salt Rock and Umhlali. The entire area offers fantastic accommodation options that provide perfect places for relaxation. The towns along the North Coast are very popular with holidaymakers that are attracted by the friendly small town atmosphere, the beautiful beaches, rocky coves and shallow paddling pools.
