Overberg simply means "over the mountain" and is the area east of Cape Town beyond the Hottentots Holland Mountains. The name comes from the early settlers who crossed the mountain, which back then was a real challenge, to see what was on the other side.

Today, you pass over the mountain a lot easier, via the N2 motorway and the beautiful Sir Lowry's Pass and Houwhoek Pass. The area stretches from these passes to the town of Swellendam in the east and as far south as you can get.

There is so much to see and experience in the area. Here you'll find Hermanus, which is known to be one of the best places on earth for land based whale watching; Gansbaai, South Africa's centre for white shark cage diving; amazing wine districts and Africa's most southerly point, Cape Agulhas, where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean meet.
