Ashton lies between the Breede River and the Langeberg Mountain and is known for its beautiful orchards, vineyards and rose cultivations. From the beginning, the city was a residential area for all the people who worked on the largest factory in the southern hemisphere that produced canned fruits, canned vegetables and jams.

Today the town is a part of Route 62, and is most famous for its wine making. In the valley there's minimal rainfall and the relatively harsh climate with warm, dry days and cool nights, makes the area ideal for producing world class wines with a very unique flavour.

If you visit Ashton, you should take a trip up to the view point which is located just outside the city and offers stunning views of the valley, the mountains and the river. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can go to Cogmans Kloof located a few kilometres outside the city and try rock climbing.
