Uniondale was formed in 1856 when it merged two cities, Hopedale and Lyons, and is linked to the coast, and the towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, via the very beautiful Prince Alfred's Pass. © Destination South Africa During the Anglo-Boer War, the city was protected by six British forts, one of which is now restored and is well worth a visit. From the fort, you have very nice views over Uniondale. Another recommended visit is Uniondale's watermill which is the largest in all of South Africa. The mill was built in 1854 and having recently been refurbished, an art gallery and a restaurant has set up inside the mill. Other activities include scenic drives, biking and hiking trails and a golf course. |
