Port Edward

- The world's smallest desert -
Dela på Facebook Dela på Twitter

About 170 km south of Durban is Port Edward, the southernmost resort on the South Coast of South Africa. This peaceful little town is surrounded by sub-tropical coastal forest and banana plantations. The beaches are in many places quite rocky but they are broken up by sandy lots and beautiful coves.

The town's main attraction is the 24 meter high lighthouse North Sand Bluff Lighthouse. If you climb the stairs all the way to the top you can enjoy the stunning views of the nearby coastline and inland.

Port Edward claims to have the world's smallest desert - Red Desert. The area is located a few kilometres west of the town and is only 11 acres big. It looks like a mini version of the Arizona Desert, with man-high hills and valleys of naked red soil which is a stark contrast to the lush subtropical surroundings.
