Olifants River

- A long wine tradition -

Almost 200 km north of Cape Town, in Citrusdal, begins the wine route that runs along the Olifants River up to Lutzville, where the country's westernmost vineyard is. The area around Lutzville is regarded as one of the most ideal areas for wine farming because of the mild climate, misty mornings, sunny days and south-westerly sea breezes.

The soil varies from sandy soil to red clay soil and rainfall is low, but the Olifants River provides farms with an abundance of water. After World War II wine farming started in earnest in the area, but the tradition is over 200 years long and these easy drinking wines have been praised both locally and internationally.
