About 45 minutes outside Cape Town is Stellenbosch where you'll find South Africa's oldest wine route. Here hundreds of wineries are represented, and therefore the area has been divided into five shorter routes: Greater Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Berg, Helderberg, Stellenbosch Hills and Bottelary Hills.

The city of Stellenbosch is a wonderful, historical university town with some of South Africa's best preserved buildings in Victorian, Georgian and Cape Dutch style. Along the streets that are lined with oak trees there's a variety of excellent restaurants, cafes, boutiques and galleries.

Here you can also visit "Oom Samie se winkel" ("Uncle Samie's shop" in Afrikaans), a shop that will transport you 200 years back in time. There you can buy pretty much everything – sweets, alcohol, clothes, tea, fruit, spices...
