- Young wine route -

Just north of Paarl lies Wellington, whose wine route is one of the youngest in South Africa despite that wine farming has been in the area since the late 1600s. Officially launched in the mid 1990s, red and white wines of outstanding quality are produced here. The vineyards are located at the Kromme River in the middle of the valley and the soil here is as excellent as the climate – hot and dry summers with precipitation during the winter.

Wellington lies at the foot of Groenberg Mountain with majestic Hawequa Mountains in the east. In this beautiful valley almost 90 percent of South Africa's vines are grown in nurseries in the area, before they are planted in other wine regions.

Here is also Wellington Wine Walk, a three day hike through vineyards, orchards and indigenous fynbos and with breaks for wine tastings and you'll also get the opportunity to sample cheese and olives. Along the way, you can overnight at the historic Huguenot farms.
